Auditing Courses and Special Student Status

Auditing Courses

Auditing gives you a chance to participate regularly in a PSR fall or spring semester course of your choice. You do not receive academic credits or a grade. Each instructor determines the ways their auditors are expected to participate in the course, but auditors usually do not write papers or take examinations.

If you are not enrolled full-time in a degree or certificate program, you may audit courses for a fee considerably less than the standard fee per credit. Full-time matriculated students, PSR alumni/ae, student spouses, current field education supervisors, and live-in program participants enjoy special auditing privileges.

To apply, first you must complete an audit application from the PSR Registrar. You must also pay the required fee listed under our audit instructions before you can officially audit a course. These instructions are specific to PSR courses only, not courses offered by the GTU or other member schools.

Use our online audit application, or contact the Registrar at 510/849-8252.

Taking Courses for Credit as Special Student Status

If you are not enrolled at PSR and would like to take one or two courses during a regular semester for academic credit, you may do so by becoming a Special Student. Special Student status is reserved for people in the following categories:

  • Persons needing to take polity/history/theology courses in order to satisfy denominational requirements
  • Persons who have been admitted to PSR for a degree or certificate program who wish to begin taking course work in the semester immediately prior to the formal beginning of their degree program
  • Persons who are uncertain about their vocational goals and which degree program best suits their needs, yet desire to take course work for credit
  • Persons who want to take graduate theological courses for personal development and enrichment

As a Special Student, you may enroll in a maximum of two courses per semester for a total of two semesters. Download our special student application (38KB PDF) or contact the Admissions Office at 510/849-8253.
